Charities: Guidestar compiles Internal Revenue Service documents showing spending and financial health of nonprofits, searchable by name or ZIP code. www.guidestar.com

Corporations: Edgar Online allows you to search Securities and Exchange Commission documents filed by for-profit, publicly traded companies. www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml

Felons: The Arizona Department of Corrections' Inmate Datasearch lists who is — or was – an inmate in Arizona's state prisons. www.adc.state.az.us/ISearch.htm

General Accounting Office: Reports issued by the investigative arm of Congress are available, including special collections on terrorism and homeland security. www.gao.gov
